About Yamunanagar District (Haryana)

Historically, Yamunanagar was the part of Ambala. It is located in the South-East of the state capital Chandigarh. Earlier, Yamunanagar city was called Jagadhri. The district is rising very rapidly. A number of multiplexes and high end brand stores have opened here. Saroj Bala is the elected Mayor of Yamunanagar.

Geographically, the district has a total 1,768 sq. km. area and occupies the rank 11th in State and 518th in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 30°13'N latitude, 77°29'E longitude and 274 m altitude. It is bounded by Himachal Pradesh state in the North, by Uttar Pradesh state in the East, by Karnal district in the South, by Kurukshetra district in the South-West and Ambala district in the West. In the year 2021, there was total 10.92% forest area of total geographical area. The river Yamuna forms the Eastern boundary of the district with the states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal. The major crops of the district are sugarcane, wheat and rice. The actual rainfall in the district was 1132.1 mm in the year of 2021-22

Administrative wise, the district is divided into 3 sub-districts, 12 towns and 636 villages. Hindi is its official language. In the state of Haryana with an allotted district code of 71 the district of Yamuna nagar came into existence on 1st November, 1989 with its administrative headquarters located at Yamuna Nagar which is situated at a distance of 106 kms from the State Capital, Chandigarh.

Demographically, according to 2011 census, The district has a total number of 2,28,163 households with a total of 12,14,205 comprising 6,46,718 are males, and 5,67,487 are females which causing it to rank 9th in the state and 393rd in the whole of India. The density of population of the district is 687 (persons per sq. km.). The sex ratio is pegged at 877 (females per every 1000 males) while the child ratio stands at 826 (females per every 1000 males). The schedule caste population of the district is recorded as 3,06,743 including 1,63,200 are males and 1,43,543 are females. The percentage of Schedule Caste is 6%. According to the 2011 census, the percentage of the principal languages of the region was Hindi with 91.11% and Punjabi with 7.24%. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 24,608 out of which 12,825 were males and 11,780 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 9,716 out of which 5,974 were males and 3,741 were females. The population growth rate during the period 2001 to 2011 was 16.57% including 15.60% were males, and 17.69% were females.

Economically, the district is dependent on agriculture primarily. Yamunanagar town has many large industries related to plywood, paper, sugar, and metal and utensils sector. Saraswati Sugar Mills is the biggest sugar mill in Asia. Shri Gopal Paper Mill is another important mill here. The district has also one of the largest railway carriage and wagon repair workshops of India. Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Station is installed by the Reliance Infrastructure here. Jagadhri, which is a part of the district, is famous for its brass and a stainless steel utensil that’s why is called as the 'Brass City'. This town is known for the cluster of plywood units and the country's finest timber. The GDDP or Gross District Domestic Product during the period 2005-06 was Rs. 3,99,849 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 3,25,849 lakh at Constant Price during the period 1999-2000. The NDDP or Net District Domestic Product during the period 2005-06 was Rs. 3,57,865 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 2,93,862 lakh at Constant Price during the period 1999-2000. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, at factor cost during the period 2011-12 was Rs. 82,232 lakh at Current Price during the period 2004-2005.

Education wise, according to the 2011 census, the literacy rate in the district is 77.99% comprising 83.84% Males, 71.38% Females. The total literate population of the district is 8,32,457 including 4,74,793 are males and 3,57,664 are females. The district has several educational institutes including schools and colleges. The district has one of the oldest engineering college namely Haryana Engineering College. It is the self-financed colleges. It provides technical education using the most modern techniques. It has world-class infrastructure with all modern facilities. It is affiliated to Kurukshetra University and is recognized by AICTE and Govt. of Haryana.

The district has numerous famous historical and religious places to visit. These places are Adibadri, Ancient Site of Sugh, Buddhist Stupa Chaneti, Ch. Devi Lal Herbal Nature Park, Fort of Buria and Rang Mahal, Harnol and Topra, Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kos Minar, Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir, Sadhaura, Chhachhrauli. In the year 2020-2021, there were total 10,188 domestic tourists who visited the above places. It is situated in the foothills of Shivaliks. The Adi Badri (ancient Badri) is the ancient abode of Bhagwan Badrinath and the place of origin of River Saraswati. It is believed that Lord Vishnu resided here in all the three yugas namely the Satyuga, Treta and Dwapar yugas (epochs). The temple has a statue of Shri Hanuman Ji with five faces which causing to temple's name, Panchmukhi (five faces). It is myth that the five Pandavas created five faces of Shri Hanuman and prayed, when visited this place.

Pritam Pal, a prominent Lokayukta in an anti-corruption ombudsman organization in Haryana was born on 3rd June, 1947 in the district of Yamunanagar.
